ENS included Georgia in the submission to inform the European Commission 2023 Enlargement Package

27 Apr, 2023

For the first time, in 2023, the European Network on Statelessness (ENS) included Georgia in the submission to inform the European Commission 2023 Enlargement Package based on the information provided by “Rights Georgia”.

European Network on Statelessness annually introduces a written submission to the European Commission on progress towards addressing statelessness in Enlargement countries. This year, for the first time, information about Georgia was reflected in the written submission, which, among other sources, is based on the information provided by “Rights Georgia”.

In the written submission it was highlighted that important steps had been taken to eliminate statelessness in Georgia, such as the introduction and implementation of the statelessness determination procedure (SDP), providing access to a number of state services for stateless persons, conducting a door-to-door campaign to identify and document stateless/undocumented persons, as well as the omission of the service fee for the submission of an application to establish the status of a stateless person and granting Georgian citizenship under the regular procedure. The submission also focuses on the next steps to be taken by the State.

Alongside Georgia, the submission includes information about Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, and the Republic of Moldova and is based on the information provided by the Network member organizations working in these countries, including “Rights Georgia”.

“Rights Georgia” joined the European Network on Statelessness in 2021. The network is a union of more than 180 civil organizations and individual experts operating in 41 countries, with the aim to eliminate the problem of statelessness throughout Europe and ensure access to rights guaranteed by international laws for stateless persons.
